Switching from ID-Tech Barcode Swipe to Optical Barcode Reader

Switching from ID-Tech Barcode Swipe to Optical Barcode Reader

Overview

Due to electrical differences and manufacturing decisions, some steps need to be taken when switching from an ID-Tech Barcode reader to an Optical Barcode reader. This article goes over the process of properly switching the voltages as well as the noteworthy wire color differences between the two.

Before Starting

Before working on any equipment, disconnect the LS2 Control Panel from power and wait for all LEDs to turn off. Do not reconnect to power until the operation is complete.

Inside the Panel

First, the voltage step-down must be removed because the Optical Reader only accepts 12V DC whereas the ID-Tech is set up for only 5V.
  1. Remove the Voltage Step-down from the panel.
  2. Disconnect the "GREEN LED" wire from the Brivo board as it is unused for this reader.
  3. Connect the positive (+) output cable from the step-down to the connection labeled "12VDC" on the reader port located on the Brivo board.

The following 4 wires should now be running from the Brivo board to the reader:
    1. 12V DC
    2. Ground
    3. Data 0
    4. Data 1

At the Reader

Once the board is set up to output 12V DC, the reader is ready to install.
  1. Remove the ID-Tech reader from the wall mount and take note of the wire connections.
  2. Swap out the ID-Tech wires and replace with the Optical Barcode scanner wires as follows:
    1. Replace ID-Tech RED with Optical RED
    2. Replace ID-Tech BLACK with Optical BLACK
    3. Replace ID-Tech PURPLE with Optical ORANGE
    4. Replace ID-Tech WHITE with Optical PURPLE
Note that while both readers share a purple data wire, its function differs. Purple must be connected to DATA1 on the Optical Barcode scanner.

Once all wires are connected, you may reconnect the LS2 Panel to power. To test, scan a known-working barcode and see if Brivo reports valid access in the Event Viewer.
If not, feel free to call Latitude Support at +1 (866) 739-8588 option 2 and we will attempt to diagnose and solve the problem.
