Taking Door Measurements

Door Measurements are vital when ordering the correct lock hardware. The following is a guide for taking measurements. We also list the most common measurements for each one so you know you're doing it right!  

1. Door Width:  Measure from edge to edge
   Common Widths: 30", 36" 42"
Measure Edge to Edge Horizontally

2. Door Thickness: Measure from edge to edge
    Common Thicknesses: 1-3/8" (interior doors); 1-3/4" (exterior doors)

3. Lock Backset: Measure from the center of the key hole to the edge of the door.  If the door is curved (radius edge), measure to the outermost edge (center)
    Common Backsets:  Commercial: 7/8", 31/32", 1-1/8", 1-1/2"; Residential: 2-3/8", 2-3/4"

4. Mortise Height: Measure the mortise opening vertically
    Common Mortise Sizes: 6-7/8"
